A woman in a dark kimono holds a golden orb — not offered to anyone, not displayed for approval, simply held. Hers. She looks directly out of the frame with the steady gaze of someone who has always known things, who grew up surrounded by the sacred in many forms and chose to carry all of it forward. The work draws on a long fascination with depictions of feminine strength in the spiritual and mystical — goddesses, seers, women who were told the universe was not theirs to touch and touched it anyway.
